I started off reading John Grisham. The thriller genre. The lawyer genre. It eased me in. It made me understand character development and getting readers on-side.
That was pretty much all I was reading – apart from Richard Ford, Tim Willocks and Guy Bellamy – before I went to university, before I bluffed my way through the Admissions Tutor interview by scouring the pages of How to Become Ridiculously Well-Read in One Evening the night before.
I guess I appreciate where it all began now, how worlds matter irrespective of perceived taste and class. Commercial fiction offers romance, history, sci-fi and so much more; protagonists made large and unforgettable.
